Envelope Replacement Project Now Through September
In coordination with architects from Wiss, Janney, Elstner Associates and construction firm Ward Contracting, the Library’s building envelope replacement project began Monday, May 11 with site preparations at 9023 Lincoln Ave, next to the Library's parking lot. Work on the Library building began simultaneously and will last through the end of September. The project is not expected to impact regular Library hours or operations.
The Library is brand new. Why is an envelope replacement needed? The priority is to ensure the long-term durability and safety of the new building. The envelope replacement project is taking place due to a materials conflict which causes softening and leaking of a black substance from the building. Library Trustees proactively investigated the issue and now take action to remedy the problem ahead of possible water incursions and structural damage.
How will this affect me as a neighbor? As a Library member? Access in and around the Library should not be impacted, with members expected to use the facility as usual during normal open hours. Use of scaffolding and fencing of work areas is anticipated on all four sides of the building including the alley on a rotating basis, with minimal disruption to the Library’s immediate neighbors.
Will the Library look different when construction is finished? When the project is complete, the Library will look exactly the same since the same replacement siding is being utilized.
Who is paying for this? Bids were opened for the project on March 20, with the lowest qualified contractor coming in at $1,763,000. The Library's settlement proceeds along with its strong financial reserve will be utilized to fund the project. There is zero burden to taxpayers.
